onmode -F

The IBM Informix utility onmode -F has the following claims made about it in the IBM documentation:

When you execute onmode -F, the memory manager examines each memory pool for unused memory. When the memory manager locates blocks of unused memory, it immediately frees the memory. After the memory manager checks each memory pool, it begins checking memory segments and frees any that the database server no longer needs.

Die IBM bietet im November zwei kostenlose Workshops zum Thema Informix an. Der 1. Workshop geht über zwei Tage und behandelt das Thema Informix Ultimate Warehouse Edition sowie Informix Warehouse Accelerator.

Der 2. Workshop umfasst einen Tag und beleuchtet die Informix Zeitreihen-Datenbanktechnologie (Informix Timeseries).

Expandable Chunks in Informix 11.70

One of my personal favorite new Features in IDS 11.70.

To enable the "Expandable Chunk" Feature we must set the following ONCONFIG Parameters:

 
 
 

$ onmode -wf SP_AUTOEXPAND=1        # 1 = The automatic creation or extension of chunks is enabled.

$ onmode -wf SP_THRESHOLD=131072    # set the minimum amount of free kilobytes that can exist in a storage space
                                    # before Informix automatically runs a task to expand the space, either by

Evolution of the Update Statistics command and tasks

Update statistics has under gone many changes through out the years and this will take a high level look at these changes.

Version 4.0 Statistics only

Version 6.0 included distributions (update statistics medium and high)

Version 7.31 Significant performance improvement

  • Update statistics low runs in parallel on fragmented indexes
  • Update distributions can utilize more memory to run multiple columns in parallel
